Honestly , this was such a cute place. Old school and very simple. This is one of those regular spots to get inexpensive food. I actually just got the pb&j when I went but a few of my group got the dipper and they thought it was great. I’d recommend going here just for the old school vibes !
Very retro experience. Penny tiled floors and servers in 1950s style uniforms. Good was prepared perfectly. I like my eggs runny and they came out exactly the way I requested. Homemade salsa was yummy with just a nice little kick .. picture doesn't do the sandwich justice. It was excellent!
Busy spot with a constant lineup, but totally worth it. The special lamb French dip was amazing, and the egg pickles was ok and cucumber pickles was a great. Paired perfectly with a cold Stella - classic, simple, and delicious!
Philippe The Original is a solid stop. We took the family downtown LA on the train, and it is a short walk from LA Union Station. The Beef French Dip sandwich was good, and the fresh Frisco bread was amazing. I really liked the double meat pastrami sandwich, big enough to share. Coffee was really good and only 46 cents. Big lunch room, easy to find seats. Line moves fast. Classic place with old school vibe and fair prices for DTLA.
The atmosphere at Phillipe reminds me of Katz’s in NYC. You line up in a more organized single-file winding line. You look for an open order take, go up and order. Got the double dip beef version of the sandwich. The amount of wetness was good (there is also the ‘wet’—goodness knows how soggy that will make your bread !!). Just a delicious sandwich. Highly recommend you slather on too taste the sauce in squeeze bottles when you sit down. Really makes the sandwich harmonious. The side of potato salad was spot on. This place is three blocks from Chinatown so able to check it out and get some baked goods like egg tart/portuguese style egg tart at Queen’s Bakery.
Philippe's The Original is an LA staple. I love going here before a Dodger game. There's always a line out the door before a Dodger game. This places a huge. There is a lot of seating. The atmosphere is energetic. There are a lot of Dodgers fans. I love the quickness of the service. The women and men behind the counter are hustling, making the sandwiches, and keeping the line moving. I got the Beef Dip. I got it dipped in the aju sauce. I love adding the hot mustard that they have. Oh man, that is hot! It cleans your sinuses. They have a lot of choices on the menu, like different types of meat for the dips. Different types of potato and macaroni salad, pickled pickles, eggs, beets, and pig's feet. They also have a breakfast menu with items like pancake and French toast. A full breakfast menu. It's a 10 of 10. I truly recommend this place.
Visited this location during our visit and we were not disappointed. I had Pastrami with Swiss on soft bun. The dip sauce was smoking along with the horseradish. Use a little with warning but still good. Excellent food, fast service with a smile.
I heard I had to visit this on my trip to LA, so I did. I parked the car for free in Chinatown and walked from there to Philippe's. The staff was very welcoming, even to a new and unsure customer like me. I took the beef double-dip with mustard, and some pickles. It tasted very good, and kept me full for a long time. Would definitely recommend.
Philippe's is an iconic LA diner/cafeteria and a must-visit for an old-school authentic Los Angeles experience. The menu is simple and simple works great! It has continuously operated since 1908 and claims to be the inventor of the French dip sandwich. A variety of sandwiches are available, mostly meat--beef, pork, pastrami, etc. and they all come with the jus for dipping. If you're not a meat fan, they have some vegetarian options: tuna, cheese, or peanut butter and jelly. Sides are all separately purchased and include options such as potato salad, whole pickle, cole slaw, etc. We came for dinner, but they also have a separate breakfast menu. You order at the counter like in a cafeteria and all the workers are efficient and friendly and dressed in diner-style outfits. There is a free parking lot behind the building for Philippe's customers. This is a great place to visit and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique experience and a touch of nostalgia.
This iconic place is always on its game! For more than 40 years I have been able to visit. Their French Dip and potato salad are always mind-blowing great. You have to order a side of pickles to complete a perfect lunch meal. Could be crowded at lunchtime, so I typically wait until 2:00 PM for easy parking and a far less crowded experience. A high recommendation here; especially for out of town guests!!
